Sightseeing Igls (Austria)
These are coming out of order, but oh well!
After the Lake Placid races, I spent another week there sliding and rehabbing my quad, then hopped on a plane back to Europe.
We had a week off before training started in Königssee, Germany, so the plan was to stay in Igls Austria during that time and slide there. Unfortunately, the FIL (internationsl Luge federation) had booked ALL of the available ice time.
So, we spent the week working out and training off-ice, working on sleds and runners, and sightseeing! One of the things we've always wanted to do but never had time for on past trips was to take the tram to the top of the mountain behind the track.
Don't lean against the glass.
One of the coolest things was going over the Igls track.
Halfway up, we had to change trams, and some people got off to go sledding nearby. On old style wooden sledges.
The boys at the top.
There was, of course, a little cafe / bar at the top.
Annie, Katie, and I decided to venture even further above the "top" to the "real top." Via one-person chairlift. If Annie looks excited here, note that it's her first time on a chairlift, ever! Glad we decided to go the extra mile.
Hard to see here, but it got quite steep.
What was on the other side of the mountain?
Great scenery and great weather for pictures.
When we got back we found the boys in the exact same position as we'd left them.
Then it was time to go back for physical therapy and training. All in all, it rather sucked not being able to slide that week, but the rest, recovery, and sightseeing more than made up for it.
